The Ford Explorer is Perfect for Any Adventure in Kentucky

A Brief Look at the 2017 Explorer

The Explorer was the beneficiary of an extensive makeover during the previous model year, but there are some new developments worth mentioning about the 2017 model of the Explorer. First and foremost, there is a new Sport package that has been added to the Explorer lineup. The Sport package brings exterior enhancements like twenty-inch gray wheels, grille, mirror caps and body side cladding to the table. You’ll also find gray leather seating and gray suede seat backs on the interior of the 2017 Explorer Sport.

In addition to the Sport trim, the 2017 Explorer is available in base, XLT, Limited and Platinum trim levels. The Platinum is the top of the line trim for the 2017 Explorer and comes with an incredible amount of standard features including satin chrome finish, chrome exhaust tips, and dual panel moonroof. Technology-wise, the 2017 Explorer comes with a color touchscreen powered by Ford’s SYNC®3 system. This system offers available navigation, smartphone integration and a host of other features.

What is the History of the Ford Explorer?

The Explorer was released in 1991 as a replacement for the historically popular Bronco model. While this decision was met with some derision from automotive pundits, the all-new Explorer sold incredibly well upon arrival. The motoring public found the Explorer’s spaciousness and style a welcome respite from the spacious yet “uncool” style of minivans at the time. The Explorer actually sold so well during its first year of existence that it beat out many of the more established sport utility vehicles on the market. Ford, realizing that even more market share could be captured with a four-door version, promptly released one and Explorer sales subsequently skyrocketed.

Explorer sales continued to grow, and in 1995 the automaker added a revolutionary Control Trac four-wheel drive system to the vehicle. Previously the 4x4 system would have to be manually engaged by the driver on the Explorer. Now, with this new system, four-wheel drive would automatically activate when needed based on road and driving conditions.

The Explorer reached the pinnacle of sales success in 1998 by becoming the best-selling sport utility vehicle in America. The factory sought to capitalize on their continued success and in 2002 released an all-new version of the Explorer. This model was bigger than its predecessor and featured more standard equipment and technology. This trend has continued for the last decade with Ford continuously improving engine technologies in the Explorer, along with equipping it with all the latest technology.
